Academic Collections And Museums
The Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg can look back on more than 500 years of history. This long tradition of teaching and research is reflected in the more than 40 academic collections and museums. These often originated from the private collecting activity of scholars, who brought objects along of study trips and expeditions for their scientific work, or who bought and exchanged them purposefully. As donations, foundations or acquisitions the collections came into the possession of the university, were constantly expanded and maintained and form an important basis of scientific research and teaching.
In recent decades some of the collections have been grouped together in central institutions such as the Central Custody or the Central Repository of Natural Science Collections. Often, however, they are still at the institutes and departments where they were created. Irrespective of the institutional affiliation, you will find basic information and contact information of all collections and museums on this page.
